I think this might be my favorite post so far. I'm familiar with Chicago and the taxis too.

I like the "Goldilocks enigma" (the illustration is great) and also think it applies to people. Kahlil Gibran wrote:

"And stand together yet not too near together: For the pillars of the temple stand apart, And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other's shadow."

It's a favorite section and we used it in our wedding vows, but I think it applies to friendships as well as planets and stars!
